School Wide PBS and Restorative Practices

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

Swan Hill Specialist School has adopted a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework. This is a proactive approach, revolving around actively teaching all students agreed expected behaviours and pro-social skills. Actively teaching these skills assists our students to develop positive behaviours and maximises each individuals social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes. Acknowledging students who meet the explicitly taught behaviours and pro-social skills, provides positive reinforcement and encourages appropriate behaviour. In addition, a small number of students may require individualised programs and intensive interventions to assist them to develop expected behaviours.

Swan Hill Specialist School in consultation with the school community has developed three key school values (as defined in our matrix).

Trust – Belonging – Kindness

Behaviour Response Continuum

The Behaviour Response Continuum provides a range of strategies and interventions that educators can employ in response to various student behaviours.

It’s a flexible framework that helps the school community address behavioural issues effectively, taking into account the severity and nature of the behaviour while promoting a positive and supportive learning environment. The continuum has been designed to be progressive, meaning that as the behaviour becomes more challenging or disruptive, the response also becomes more structured and intensive.

The main purpose of this continuum is to guide educators in choosing the most appropriate response based on the specific behaviour exhibited by a student.

The Behaviour Response Continuum recognises that different behaviours require different responses and that a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective. Our school aims to create a supportive environment that promotes positive behaviour and helps students succeed academically and socially. Collaboration among teachers, administrators, students, and families is essential for the success of this continuum.

What is Restorative Practices?

How do we build and maintain healthy relationships in schools?

The most profound learning occurs when there is a healthy relationship between teacher and student. Restorative Practices assists teachers, students and parents to build, maintain and restore relationships. Restorative Practices will help build capacity to enable students to self-regulate behaviour and contributes to the improvement of learning outcomes.

Swan Hill Specialist School prides itself in the relationships developed between students, teachers and families. Using the Restorative Practices approach, students gain more ownership of their behaviour, in relation to the person who caused the harm, the person harmed and the respective consequences and follow up agreed upon.
